12 weeks during pregnancyCongratulations your pregnant - The first 12 weeks
Ok so the doctor has just said to you "Congratulations, you are confirmed as pregnant!" or the home test is saying you're pregnant. Your body is going to have a whirlwind adventure over the next few months, partners, family, friends, even people you don't know that well will all be glad for you.
So what is in store then ?
The medical profession measure early pregnancy cycle based on a number of points that are reached. Noteable points are day of last menstruation, ovulation, fertilization, implantation and chemical detection. Unfortunately most miscarriages occur over this period.
How do I keep myself informed of my pregnancy ?
Well the good news is that there is so much information freely available to you:
- Other mums (family and friends) - NCT - Other support groups - Internet articles - Internet forums (net mums etc) - Doctor
........the list goes on and on, so you will not be short of information that's for sure. The first trimester (which is the first twelve's weeks of your pregnancy) can be the most difficult due to the vast array of complications and symptoms caused by your now growing body.
The good news is of course that the second trimester usually has fewer symptoms as your body adjusts to be being pregnant and you just get used to it more. You should cut back on any extreme activities or eating habits you previously subjected your body to before becoming pregnant.
The most reported symptoms during the first trimester are:
Fatigue * Nausea Light-headedness Breast tenderness Nipples / areolas darken - increased hormone levels
If you are able top grab some extra sleep, take it, as your body will definitely thank you at this stage. Sleep is going to be something you will need to try and take when you can as your pregnancy develops and once baby is born.
Pay particular attention to your diet, while you are nauseous it may not be something that is top of your list, but this will get better. Having a good balanced diet will help you get through the next few months.
You may not see your doctor as often during this stage but keep him / her informed of anything you are not happy with or concerned about.
Preparing for babies arrival is great fun and read what you can / keep informed of new developments and ensure you address any concerns with your doctor.
The hormone changes (a brief list of what on earth is going on inside)
Progesterone rises Estrogens rises Hypothalamic axis suppressed Prolactin levels increased Parathyroid hormone increased Cortisol increased Aldosterone increased Placental lactogen produced
* Also known as exhaustion, lethargy, languor, lassitude, listlessness and can be physical as well as mental
