Clevamama - Plagiocephaly
Plagiocephaly and the Clevermama Foam Pillow
Babies often have flattened areas on their heads as a result of sleeping on their backs. However, in some cases there are other issues and complications
OK so what is Plagiocephaly exactly then ?
It might surprise you to find out that the skull of human isn't completely smooth, in fact it has lumps, dips and in some areas it is flatter. Where there are larger areas of the skull that becomes flat, this is know as Plagiocephaly.
What are the symptoms of Plagiocephaly ?
Sometime babies are born with a flat head (usually temporary from the passage along the canal). In other cases it happens at a later time and as the bones start to fuse together in the skull.
How can I tell if my baby has Plagiocephaly ?
Usually you can notice this if you look down onto baby's head from above.
What are the most common signs of Plagiocephaly ?
- Parallelogram-shaped skull if you look from above - Flattening on one side at the back of the head - Baby's eyes look to be unequal - Looking at the flattened side of the head, there maybe a bald spot
Usually X-rays, CT scans or some other types of tests may be needed to confirm if it is Plagiocephaly
So what exactly are the causes of Plagiocephaly and tell me more about the risks to my baby.?
As your baby's skull is very soft, it can grow in lots of different directions without much effort. If baby's skull is in one particular position for a long time, say while a sleep for example, this may lead to a flattening of the skull. It should be noted that this usually just gets better over time and by itself. However, as always if you are not sure you must seek professional medical advice and guidance
Other causes of Plagiocephaly could be:
- Multiple birth pregnancy (as the babies re squashed in the womb) - Prematurely - Bad muscle tone (insufficient fluids)
How can I prevent Plagiocephaly ?
The most obvious way to do this is to ensure baby does not stay in one position for longer than necessary (easier said than done!). Sleep pillows are thought to assist with distributing the weight more evenly such as the Clevermama Foam Pillow for example which helps support and pressure relief of baby's head.
Treatment and recovery
Keeping baby off the part of the head that has flattened, using a sleep pillow like the Clevermama Foam Pillow are thought to help. Generally speaking it takes 6 - 8 weeks to notice improvements
Once again though and as always if you are not sure you must seek professional medical advice and guidance.
