Bad Breath during pregnancySmelly Breath and Pregnant ?
A close pregnant friend of mine mentioned to be recently that since being pregnant she has noticed that her breath has started to smell. I hadn't noticed (honestly!) so I thought I would write a quick article about it following the research I have completed on the matter. Thinking back to when I was pregnant, and come to think of it I do seem to remember that my breath did smell slightly, although my husband was far to polite to mention it.
Having typed in 'smelly breath and pregnant ' into the search engine, I was amazed at the number of documents, files and reports of this. This is particularly unusual, as it doesn't really feature in any of the list of things that are known to make your breath smell. The usual suspects being garlic, strong cheese etc etc.....but not usually pregnancy. In fact it often occurs during pregnancy and it is perfectly normal, so there is no need to worry.
Its not always straight forward dealing with bad breath when you are pregnant as taking any medication is not usually a good idea when you are pregnant.
Many pregnant women do notice that their breath does smell along with a faint metallic tinny taste in the mouth. This is usually halitosis or a change in your bodies hormones, a hormonal imbalance. It just might also be the fact that your dental health is deteriorating following morning sickness etc or something much more serious such as an issue with liver or kidneys.
People who have suddenly had bad breath, changed something about their lifestyle recently, new or different diet maybe or just a drop in health levels generally. Either way, when you are pregnant, if you are not sure, seek professional medical help and visit the doctor to check it out.
As pregnancy progresses, your body needs more calcium that it would have needed before pregnancy. The body has a great store of this in your teeth and as you are now providing for two, any lack of available calcium for baby will come from your teeth. Therefore it is important that you ensure good dental hygiene and a good supply of calcium for growing baby.
- Drink water - Decaying teeth and disease of your gums go together - Visit the dentist more often for a check - Clean twice a day - Avoid strong smelly foods such as strong curries - Ensure good calcium levels
Some people have recommended natural / herbal remedies for Halitosis and includes oils such as natural remedies for such lemon oil, lime oil, spearmint oil, almond oil or peppermint oil. These oils come from the roots of the plants and other organic sources. They can be effective in keeping on top of the anaerobic bacteria which is the cause of the bad smell in your breath. You should always consult with your doctor if you are in any doubt whatsoever or if you experience sudden bad breath.
