As the Winter is well and truly upon us, dark evenings and mornings, sharp chilly air all around. White blanket coverings in the garden......just makes you want to have some warm comfort food ! Below are the 4little1s.com favourite winter warmers to see you through the cold days.
Porridge
I can remember having a bowl of porridge with sultanas on the top when I was a child on a cold frosty morning before school. Its the same now with my children; Porridge is a great winter warmer. Put one cup of oats into a saucepan with four cups of milk. Stir gently over a medium heat until it starts to bubble. Turn down the heat slightly and simmer (stirring regularly) for about five minutes. Add a pinch of sugar to taste and stir well. Serve with one or more of these toppings and you will be popular
1 tsp or a squeeze of golden syrup/honey/maple syrup Chopped fruit or berries (fresh, tinned, dried or frozen) Mashed banana Apple puree and cinnamon Grated plain chocolate Milk and a sprinkle of brown sugar Maple syrup and a drop of cream 1 tsp chocolate spread and chopped banana 1 tsp marmalade or jam Honey, chopped nuts and cinnamon
Hot Chocolate
Buy a bar of really good quality chocolate (buy the best one you can afford) some whipped cream, a bag of mini marshmallows and some quality chocolate powder Break two or three large chunks off and put them into a saucepan Heat slowly and gently until the chocolate melts Pour milk (soy or goats milk can be used) into the pan and mix in with the chocolate Pour out into your favourite mug and then decorate with some whipped cream, marshmallows and a light sprinkle of chocolate power.
Apple Crumble
Apple crumble really is easy to make and is a brilliant winter warmer, especially with custard. 125g plain white flour 75g marg or butter 25g sugar (demerara if you have it) 50g porridge oats
Peel, core and slice some dessert apples and put in the bottom of an oven proof dish. Get your children to mix all the flour, margarine and sugar until they are like breadcrumbs or, alternatively whizz the mixture for 15 seconds in the food processor. Stir in the oats and put the mixture on top of the apples. Bake at 190 C/Gas Mark 5 for 40 to 45 mins. Allow the crumble to cool slightly and serve with yoghurt, custard or creme fraiche. If you use cooking apples instead of eating apples, you will need to add 1-2 tsp of sugar per apple, before topping with the crumble mixture.
